MOTHER CHILD EDUCATION PROGRAM
A successful example of collaboration between a non-governmental organization and the state.
Success of the eight-year mandatory basic education depends on high quality and widespread preschool education. Presently in Turkey , only 25% of children between the ages of 4 to 6 benefit from preschool education provided by educational institutions. This is why AÇEV supports eight-year mandatory education, by organizing programs for children that do not have the opportunity to benefit from preschool education provided by educational institutions.
The basis of these programs is the Mother Child Education Program (MOCEP), which AÇEV developed, and after joint implementation over a number of years, handed over to the Apprenticeship and Non-formal Education General Directorate under the Ministry of National Education. Currently still implemented as a training program within the framework of the Ministry of National Education, it is one of the most successful examples of collaboration between a non-governmental organization and the state.
In addition to the Ministry of National Education, the program is also implemented at Community Centers within the framework of a collaboration established with the Social Services and Child Protection Agency of the Prime Ministry.
Studies show that children who were not able to benefit from 0 to 6 preschool education exhibit deficient social and physical development, which results in low rates of school success and number of years spent in scholastic pursuit. However, raising awareness among people in children's close environment, such as their parents, eliminates these harmful outcomes.
