Wiil You Play With Me?In 2001, in an attempt to significantly multiply the number of beneficiaries reached, AÇEV decided to apply its expertise in early childhood and adult education to an innovative television project. Working in collaboration with the public broadcasting service TRT (Turkish Radio Television), AÇEV developed a television program entitled "Will you play with me?" (‘Benimle Oynar mısın?’ in Turkish) which targets both children and their parents. This move to include parents in the target audience is actually what ‘sets this television program apart from other children’s programs’ argues Prof. Bekman, academic consultant to AÇEV. As such, this program was developed not only in order to reach a larger group of people, but was also developed as an alternative to existing children’s programs.

The program’s academic content, structure and specific aims were carefully designed by a team of academicians and practitioners from AÇEV. The entire program, from conception to broadcast, took over a year of collaborative team work. AÇEV’s team of consultants worked very closely with the writing team, as well as TRT’S production team throughout the entire process. The end result was a program which is educational yet entertaining, full of important messages and yet fun to watch.

Wiil You Play With Me?In general, the program aims not only to support the cognitive, physical, social and emotional development of pre schoolers, but also to support parents in their parenting roles by providing them with information on child rearing, child development and positive parenting attitudes. In order to reach these general objectives, over 300 specific objectives were formulated based primarily on the content of The Mother Child Education Program and The Father Support Program and also on the input of academicians from related fields, pediatricians and other educators.

As a result of the success of the first 65 segments, a second 65 segments have been prepared and will air in the fall of 2002. In addition, during this second run, an extensive research project, developed in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the program will be conducted. This project will be realized in cooperation between Koç University and AÇEV and will be carried out by Prof. Çiğdem Kağıtçıbaşı, Asst. Prof. Fatoş Gökşen, Asst. Prof. Nazlı Baydar and Assoc. Prof. Aylin Kuntay.
